What size storage unit do you actually need?

The honest answer is that most people guess low. Below is every size we rent, matched to a room you already know and the contents it realistically holds.

Start with what you are storing

Find the closest description and jump to that size. When you are genuinely between two, take the larger one — the price difference is usually small next to the cost of running out of room mid-move.

Packing

Six things that make a unit feel bigger

How you load a unit matters as much as which size you pick. These are the habits that save people from renting a size up.

  • Leave a walkway

    Keep a path down the centre so you can reach the back without unloading everything. This is the single most common regret people have about their unit.

  • Heavy low, light high

    Books and tools on the bottom, linens and lampshades on top. Uniform box sizes stack far better than mixed ones.

  • Label toward the aisle

    Write on the side of the box, not the top, and face the labels out. You will not want to rotate forty boxes to find one.

  • Lift furniture off the slab

    Pallets or scrap lumber under upholstered pieces keeps air moving and guards against any moisture on the concrete.

  • Drain anything with fuel or water

    Mowers, trimmers and hoses should be emptied before they go in. Most facilities, including ours, do not allow fuel in enclosed units.

  • Disassemble what you can

    Bed frames and table legs come apart in minutes and can cut the space you need by a whole size class. Tape the hardware to the piece it belongs to.

Common questions about sizes

What size storage unit do I need?

Match the unit to the number of rooms you are storing. A 5x10 holds a small one-bedroom apartment. A 10x10 holds one to two bedrooms. A 10x20 holds a three to four bedroom house and is about the size of a one-car garage. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one — packing space disappears faster than people expect.

How big is a 10x10 storage unit?

A 10x10 unit is 100 square feet, about the size of an average bedroom. It typically holds the furnishings of a one or two bedroom apartment including a refrigerator, washer and dryer, patio furniture and a good number of boxes.

What fits in a 10x20 storage unit?

A 10x20 is 200 square feet, roughly a one-car garage. It holds the furnishings of a three or four bedroom house — appliances, patio furniture, many boxes and extras — or a vehicle.

Can I store an RV or boat?

Yes. We have 12x30 outdoor uncovered gravel parking spaces suited to RVs, travel trailers, boats on trailers and utility trailers.

Can I switch to a different size later?

Yes, subject to availability. We rent eight sizes on one property and rentals are month to month, so you can move up or down as your needs change. Call the office and we will arrange the transfer.

How do I measure what I need before I rent?

Group everything you plan to store in one place, then measure the footprint in feet and add room to walk in. Remember you can stack boxes to about six feet safely. If you want a second opinion, call us and describe what you have — we do this every day.
